Election 2004
It's a Voter's World...Nonvoters Just Live in It Do NOT Sit this Election Cycle Out
The upcoming presidential and congressional elections will impact our country and the world. But their results
will be felt much more locally - in our cities, our communities, and our neighborhoods. We in the nonprofit sector
cannot sit by and watch the election, and our future, pass us by. We must engage our constituents, our staff,
our volunteers, our funders, and our friends.
While nonprofits cannot engage in partisan political activity, and are limited in the amount of lobbying they
can do, they are not prohibited from engaging in all election-related activities. A special section of NCNA's website describes some of the ways
nonprofits - YOU - can get involved, and provides you with the information and tools you will need.
The National Council of Nonprofit Associations has partnered with Working Assets to register voters for the
2004 election. You can register to vote or change your registration address
Possible Restrictions on Advocacy
On March 4 the Federal Election Commission approved issuance of a proposed rule that would establish a
new threshold for when an organization becomes a regulated federal political committee. The rule has
the potential to negatively impact nonpartisan advocacy. NCNA is in the process of preparing comments
to submit to the FEC. More details are available at NCNA's website
Election 2004 Online Resource Center
INDEPENDENT SECTOR has created a new online resource center that offers examples
of what other nonprofits are doing and voter registration information, among other
tools. Please share your own organization's activities or any resources, online or
otherwise, that would help other nonprofits encourage voter participation and raise
the visibility of issues important to them during this election season--email
